Remuneration Packages in the Northern Territory Public Sector

Positions in the Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS) are advertised as a package. A standard package incorporates annual salary + 9% employer superannuation contributions + 17.5% leave loading bonus + the value of two weeks extra recreation leave.

Salary

Almost every classification in the NTPS has a salary range. Employees generally commence at the minimum of the salary range relevant to their classification and receive an annual increment until their salary reaches the top level. Some senior classifications have performance based incremental advancement.

Superannuation*

The NT Government contributes 9% of an employee’s salary and relevant allowances, in line with the superannuation guarantee.

Leave Loading Bonus

The leave loading bonus is an amount calculated to 17.5% of the value of recreation leave accrued over the previous year up to a maximum, adjusted annually.

Two Weeks Recreation Leave**

Most staff in the NTPS receive six weeks recreation leave per annum, although there are some exceptions. The value of the additional two weeks is included as an option in the package, should an employee choose to convert the time off to cash. It is the employees’ choice to cash in recreation leave and should in no way be seen as mandatory.

(The National Employment Standards require a minimum of four weeks accrued annual leave entitlement to remain following the cashing up of leave).
